This is totally up to you, your tastes and level of comfort. I have roughed it in 5 star resorts and have made it through with no problems in guesthouses with only outdoor bathrooms and cold water showers. 

 You’re going to have to decide on what you want and what you cannot live without. Air- Conditioning or fan? Wi-Fi, internet service? Late night street food or room service? Your choosing between the high thread cotton sheets or a lumpy bed with an old mosquito net.

Luckily the poorest of countries have some of the nicest accommodations that are readily available at the last minutes notice so you don’t have to worry about getting a subpar room on the street. It’s all about your preference.
